Keeping Kids Moving: Physical Activity Opportunities During and After School
September 2013

Physical activity during and after-school can help kids stay healthy, learn better, behave better, and miss fewer days of school. Kaiser HEAL communities are implementing active recess, inclassroom physical activity videos, and revamping after-school physical activity policies and curriculum. We want to know what worked, what changed, and how effective and sustainability are these strategies. We invite partners leading physical activity strategies, school administrators, teachers, after-school staff, parents and students to join this discussion on keeping kids moving.

Parks Make Life Better: Perceptions of Safety and Use for Physical Activity

We invite city parks and recreation staff, youth, residents, police and safety officers, planners, and safe routes to school leads to join this discussion and share challenges and solutions for making life better with parks.

Our discussion will be instigated by Rosalia Calam, a Whittier resident working to build relationships with store owners to make and sustain healthy changes in her neighborhood stores and Chelsea Fiss, Retail Program Manager from the San Diego Network for a Healthy California. We invite food retail strategy partners, corner store and restaurant owners, and residents to join this discussion on creating and sustaining healthy food retailers.

Healthy Food, Healthy Revenue in Schools
May 2013

Traditionally, schools may use revenue from the student store, vending machines, and fundraisers to support staff, clubs, sports programs, and even graduation ceremonies. Participants include Jacqueline Domac, champion healthy fundraiser and former LAUSD teacher, and Nancy Maxson, Health & Prevention Programs Coordinator at Ventura Unified School District. We invite school administrators, PTA members, food service staff, teachers, and students to join this discussion and share their successes, concerns, and challenges in generating a healthy revenue with healthier foods.

Resident Engagement and Coalition Building
April 2012
Many of you have created successful City or County-wide coalitions for healthy eating and active living, but are grappling with how to develop a successful coalition for the Zone. How should it differ from our larger coalitions? How can we identify and engage new partners in the Zone? How do we engage residents in a meaningful way? Are there lessons from other initiatives about balancing resident and agency involvement? How might our community assessments inform this process? This session will highlight early lessons from East Riverside and Lemon Grove, but we invite all sites to share their insights, experiences and questions!
